Personalized Visits

The personalized visit is the key component of the Parents As Teachers program. A PAT Parent Educator goes to the home and works individually with the parent and the child and shares age-appropriate child developmental information. They help parents learn to observe their own child, address their parenting concerns, and engage the family in activities that provide meaningful parent/child interaction.
Personalized visits are monthly, and are one hour in length. Visits can start pre-birth, and can be continued for up to three years of service, or until the child turns three years-old. PAT has a current waiting list of parents wanting personalized visits. Single parents, first-time parents, teen parents, and families with special concerns are given priority.
Each month the Parent Educator leaves the parent with written information using the Born to Learn TM Curriculum plans that are appropriate for the child’s developmental stage and age.
Goals of a Personal Visit:
- Increase parents’: knowledge of child development; observation skills; feelings of confidence and competence as teachers of their child
- Provide opportunity for parents to apply knowledge
- Prepare parents for what’s coming next in their child’s development
- Read a book brought by the Parent Educator
- Share new information and handouts
- Follow the progress from previous visits to reinforce parents’ knowledge and the child’s developmental progress
- Leave the parent with ideas and activities to promote further growth
